SIDUNG

2021

Murals & Public Art

Project Details

On August 3, 2021 Black womxn and non binary artists shut down Baldwin Street for a massive street mural envisioning a future without oppression. Black Womxn Paint began in 2020 in response to a rise in anti-Black racism, and the disproportionate effect of Covid-19 on Black communities and womxn. It is our hope that, if we can envision that future, we can begin to build it together.

Sidung is a Patwah command meaning to sit. Black people have done so much in the fight for fairness and equality for such a long time that it is imperative to remind them to find moments to be still. There was a point in our history where our ancestors wanted to rest but couldn't so in honour of those who passed, my message to those who are here is to take a breath and have a moment to sit.
